CONSULTING
If you're unsure where to start your
preparations, may we suggest an initial consultation.
Why would you want to hire a security consultant?
Schools and churches are
generally “soft targets.”
In other words, there is not
much of anything that would prevent or counter an attack.
State law prohibits anyone
other than law enforcement officers from carrying or
possessing weapons on school grounds, so schools are
essentially defenseless.
Churches don’t have the same
statutory constraints, but
on the other hand, we don’t
really believe anything bad would ever happen to us or our
people. Based on that belief,
we act “responsibly” and spend our money in other areas of
ministry.
Because “the unthinkable” has
already happened to numerous churches all across the
country, the truth is that we really can’t afford not to
address security.
If we don’t have
security-minded people already on staff, it can be much more
cost-effective to bring in outside help.
Consultants come in
a variety of “shapes and sizes,” so there are some
attributes to consider in the selection process.
You should only select a consultant who
has an excellent character, and a documented record of
integrity as well as the skills to do the work.
You should expect a consultant to be
objective, but empathetic to the challenges of maintaining
the open, welcoming atmosphere we want to create at our
places of worship.
